How to get a Virgin Media Mail app password
Open the My Virgin Media app, go to Account settings › Account details › Virgin Media Mail › Manage, and tap Generate new App password. It's three words. Some versions put it under Identity & Security › Manage your products › Manage email app password.
To use your Virgin Media email in another app (Outlook, Thunderbird, the iPhone Mail app) or with a copying tool, you need a Virgin Media Mail app password. It's separate from the password you use for My Virgin Media. Virgin requires it because email apps can't use the extra sign-in protection your main account has (Virgin Media help).
How to create one
- Open the My Virgin Media app on your phone and sign in.
- Tap Account settings, then Account details.
- Under Virgin Media Mail, tap Manage next to the app password option.
- Tap Generate new App password and follow the instructions.
- Copy the password straight away (it's made of three words) and paste it where it's needed.
In some versions of the app the option is under Account settings › Identity & Security › Manage your products › Manage email app password instead.
Things to know
- Generating a new app password replaces the old one. Any app using the old one (for example the Mail app on your iPad) will need the new one.
- It's safer than sharing your main password. An app password only gives access to email, and you can delete it whenever you like without changing anything else.
- Server settings to use with it: IMAP
imap.virginmedia.com, port 993, SSL on; username is your full Virgin email address.
Delete it when you're finished
Once your emails are copied, go back to the same screen in the My Virgin Media app and remove the app password. Any tool that used it, including Keep My Emails, then loses access immediately.
Can't find the option?
Make sure the app is up to date, and that the email address is linked to the account you sign in to My Virgin Media with: each address needs its own app password. If your email has already moved to Junara, use a Junara app password instead. If you're a former Virgin customer without broadband, landline or TV, you may not have access to My Virgin Media; contact Virgin Media or Junara to ask how to get access to your mailbox before the deadline.
Questions people ask
Why is the app password option missing?
Usually because the email address isn't linked to the account you sign in with. Each address needs its own app password. Make sure the app is up to date.
Is an app password safe to give to an app?
It only opens email, not your Virgin Media account, and you can delete it at any time in the same screen.
