Can I keep my Virgin Media email address?

Quick answer

Yes, but only by moving it to Junara, Virgin Media's new email provider. Current customers get 12 months free (99p fee), or 18 months if they need extra support. Former customers pay a Junara plan straight away. The address can't be moved to Gmail, Outlook or anyone else, so if you let it go, copy your emails first.

Virgin Media O2 is handing its old email service, covering ntlworld.com, blueyonder.co.uk, virgin.net and virginmedia.com addresses, to a new provider called Junara (Virgin Media O2's announcement). Whether you can keep your address now depends on one thing: moving it to Junara.

How long can I keep it?

For as long as you keep paying Junara. For current customers, the free period ends 12 (or 18) months after you move, so the first paid renewals arrive from late 2027. If you stop paying, Junara suspends the mailbox and deletes it if it isn't reactivated within 120 days.

What if I leave Virgin broadband now?

Older advice, still quoted on many forum threads, says Virgin closes your email about 90 days after you leave. That was Virgin's old rule. Under the new plan, every Virgin Media address goes through the same steps: a letter, at least 45 days to decide, then a 120-day recovery window, then deletion. Leaving broadband means you'd be a former customer, so keeping the address would cost a Junara plan straight away. Work out your own dates with the deadline calculator.

Can I move my ntlworld or blueyonder address to Gmail?

No. An email address belongs to whoever runs its domain, and the ntlworld.com, blueyonder.co.uk, virgin.net and virginmedia.com domains stay with Virgin Media's email service, now run by Junara. Gmail, Outlook and iCloud can receive your emails, but they can't take over the address. Nobody else can transfer it to you either, whatever an advert says.

Keep the address and back up the emails

Many people do both: move the address to Junara to keep receiving mail at it, and copy every old email to Gmail or a download as a backup. That way nothing is lost if you later decide Junara isn't worth paying for. See how to move your emails to Gmail or how to download them all.

If you let the address go: update these first

Before the account closes, change your email address on the accounts that matter most. Otherwise password resets and important letters go to an address that no longer exists:

Search your old inbox for each company's name to find the ones you've forgotten.

What happens if I do nothing?

The account is suspended after your decision window and permanently deleted about 165 days after your first message, together with every email, folder and contact in it. There's no way to get it back after that.
