How to move your Virgin Media email to iCloud or Outlook

Quick answer

Neither iCloud Mail nor Outlook.com can pull in a Virgin Media mailbox by itself. Copy it over IMAP: iCloud needs an app-specific password from your Apple Account, and Outlook.com uses Microsoft sign-in. Every folder and its dates can come across.

If you use an iPhone, iPad or Mac, iCloud Mail is a natural new home for your Virgin Media emails. Outlook.com users can move too. Neither has a built-in way to import another mailbox, so you need either a copying tool or a desktop email app.

Moving to iCloud Mail

  1. Turn on iCloud Mail on your Apple device (Settings › your name › iCloud › iCloud Mail) and create your @icloud.com address if you haven't.
  2. Create an app-specific password in your Apple Account: Sign-In and Security › App-Specific Passwords.
  3. Create a Virgin Media Mail app password in the My Virgin Media app. How.
  4. Copy the emails:
    • with Keep My Emails: choose iCloud Mail as the destination and every folder is copied with its dates (£14.99 one-time); or
    • by hand: add both accounts to Mail on a Mac or to Thunderbird, then drag folders from Virgin into iCloud.

Moving to Outlook.com (or Hotmail / Live)

Outlook.com no longer lets other apps sign in with a password; apps have to use Microsoft's own sign-in. That rules out most password-based copying tools.
